Established in 1999, Coastal Concerts is committed to making classical music accessible to residents of the central Delmarva (Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia) Peninsula through live performances, educational programs, and community outreach activities.
Presented in Lewes, DE, Coastal Concerts’ annual subscription series features critically acclaimed soloists and small string, wind, brass or mixed ensembles of a caliber typically heard in major metropolitan areas. Some of the featured artists have included pianists Misha Dichter and Stephen Hough, clarinettist Richard Stoltzman, violinist Elena Urioste, the Prism Saxophone Quartet, and the Lincoln Trio. Ahead of selected concerts, visiting musicians lead public discussions to provide perspectives on the works they will perform. They also conduct enrichment programs in local schools, in many cases giving students their first exposure to classical music and to instruments such as the violin and harpsichord.
Support from the Paul M. Angell Family Foundation has enabled Coastal Concerts to present world-class talent and provide educational experiences aligned with Delaware’s ambitious arts education standards and assessments. Nearly 6,000 students have participated in school-based programs, attended concerts at no cost through Coastal Concerts’ free youth admission program, or received scholarships to continue their music education.
The Foundation most recently provided funding for the American Brass Quintet – hailed by Newsweek magazine as “the high priests of brass” – to perform at Coastal Concerts. The talented musicians also conducted a workshop with middle and high school students, including members of the high school’s brass quintet.
The Foundation is proud to support these programs, which promote the appreciation of classical music and help to cultivate the next generation of performers, teachers and audiences.
