Broadway School of Music & the Arts

January 14, 2020

Since 2015, the Paul M. Angell Family Foundation (PMAFF) has been a proud supporter of the Broadway School of Music & the Arts (BSMA). PMAFF funding has enabled BSMA to increase onsite student private lesson enrollment, create new participatory music education opportunities, and engage over 150 low income and homeless citizens through its Musical Meals program.

The Broadway School of Music & the Arts has its roots in Broadway-Slavic Village, a diverse Cleveland neighborhood edging the industrial valley just southeast of downtown, where close to 80% of school-age children attend Cleveland public schools, 30% of residents lack a high school degree, and 28% are unemployed. Housed in a historic former music conservatory, for 38 years BSMA has remained committed to enriching lives by providing access to high quality, diverse arts and music instruction and programming. BSMA provides these services to all individuals regardless of age, race, religion, level of ability, or financial means.

Last year, 2,075 individuals directly benefited from BSMA’s programs, including 1,095 youth. To keep its onsite private lessons affordable BSMA has provided over $111,000 in tuition assistance over the past 20 years. Close to half of students receive such assistance covering up to 95% of their tuition, and sometimes a loaned instrument as well. BSMA has also reduced financial barriers to participation in it onsite youth drum corps, which costs just $10 per year.

Over the past decade, in response to dramatic changes in the demographics of the Broadway-Slavic Village neighborhood and the needs of its residents, BSMA has transformed its focus to engaging underserved urban residents in high quality arts and music education programs through partnerships with 22 community-serving organizations across Cleveland. By taking more of its programming into the community, it has increased access to arts participation, particularly to underserved children, its primary audience.

All of BSMA’s offsite programs are free to participants, and include after-school and summer visual art, dance and music classes, and older adult storytelling and watercolor classes. Its pre-K Eurhythmics and visual art program helps young children develop not only musically and artistically, but also build literacy, math and social skills, imagination and physical dexterity. The Musical Meals program provides music by top-notch Cleveland musicians once a month at a free community dinner at a nearby hunger center.

Grantee Spotlight – Ecology Project International

March 23, 2016

Founded in 2000, Ecology Project International (EPI) involves young people from the U.S. and Latin America in hands-on science and conservation projects that protect species and habitat in five countries, bridging the gap between cultures and empowering the next generation of conservation leaders.

Over 23,000 students have participated in EPI’s field programs. Of those participants, over 70% are local youth living in communities adjacent to the project site. Our impact is profound on both local and visiting students, establishing a lifelong commitment to conservation.

The Paul M. Angell Family Foundation has provided support for EPI programs in Belize and Costa Rica.

In partnership with the Oceanic Society, University of Belize, Belize Audubon Society, and Wildlife Conservation Society, EPI students engage in bottlenose dolphin, lionfish, conch, lobster, sea urchin, and coral research on the largest barrier reef in the northern hemisphere. They also participate in bird and terrestrial mammal research at Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary.

On the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, the world’s fourth most important nesting habitat for critically endangered leatherback sea turtles, students monitor nesting females. Youth patrol the beach to restore habitat, gather vital data, and protect nests against human and environmental threats.

The Foundation is proud to support these programs, which raise awareness of Central American ecological treasures while engaging youth to become the next generation’s conservation guardians.

Grantee Spotlight – Christopher House

August 13, 2015

CHLogo

Christopher House began in 1906 as a settlement house to help immigrants adjust to life in the U.S. Over the last century, our program has evolved to meet the needs of Chicago’s low-income population. Currently, Christopher House serves more than 5,000 individuals annually through four centers throughout Chicago’s North and West Sides: Uptown, Logan Square, Avondale, and Belmont Cragin. Our newest center in Belmont Cragin, which opened in August 2013, offers our full range of schools to this high need community, where there is a critical shortage of early childhood and parenting programs, and the vast majority of public schools are on academic probation. This new site is also home to Christopher House’s first elementary school, which will educate students from birth through eighth grade.

CH2

Christopher House provides a continuum of high-quality schools serving infant, preschool, elementary, high school, as well as support services that create stable, self-sufficient families. Our centers are nationally renowned and have earned the highest ratings in the City of Chicago. High standards, high expectations, data-driven outcomes, and a commitment to continuous quality improvement for students, families, and our staff are the driving force behind all of our work.

Christopher House’s programs are grouped into four “schools:”

  • Christopher House Infant School and Pre-School prepares children, ages 6-weeks to 5 years old, for school, stimulates cognitive growth, and develops emotional intelligence
  • Christopher House Elementary School builds educational continuity from pre-school through elementary school and empowers achievement and perseverance in all students.
  • Christopher House After-School drives students, ages 6 to 18 years old, to develop healthy behaviors, explore new opportunities, achieve academic excellence, and succeed in post-secondary education.
  • Christopher House Parent School, including our Family Support Services, offers education and support to help parents provide a safe, self-sufficient, and nurturing home environment conducive to educational success.

CH1

The investment from The Paul M. Angell Family Foundation will allow Christopher House’s family of schools to continue to grow and to support each child’s educational development through both academic rigor in the classroom, social work and parent education.
